In a startling revelation in the health community, cases of syphilis among newborns has risen at dramatic and alarming numbers, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.According to the CDC, recent numbers show that more than 3,700 babies in the U.S. were born with syphilis in 2022, a number that is more than 10 times higher than the total number cases in 2012.The sexually transmitted infection is known to cause a number of devastating lifelong medical conditions, as well as other tragic outcomes like miscarriage, infant death and stillbirth.CDC officials say the increase in infant infections follows along the same path as the rising number of syphilis cases among women of reproductive age, particularly those with social and economic factors that act as barriers for quality health care."The congenital syphilis crisis in the United States has skyrocketed at a heartbreaking rate," said CDC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Debra Houry. The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is all in on its plans to build a roughly five-mile long tunnel under downtown San Jose and Santa Clara for its Silicon Valley BART extension after officials announced this week it had purchased a $76 million tunnel boring machine.The custom-made machine was ordered from German company Herrenknecht and will be manufactured, assembled and tested in Germany before its disassembled and shipped in pieces to Santa Clara County. (KRON) -- A group of Monterey County teenagers stole an SUV, evaded law enforcement, drove the wrong way on Highway 101 in Salinas, and caused a major head-on crash Tuesday night, police said.The Greenfield Police Department said the incident is a grim wakeup call for what can happen when juveniles make bad decisions. (KRON) -- A farm owner was charged with involuntary manslaughter after his worker was killed while servicing a 16,000-pound spinach harvester, prosecutors announced Wednesday. The Santa Clara County Grand Jury returned an indictment against a Watsonville-based company, Willoughby Farms in Santa Cruz County and its owner, for causing the death of Carlos Jimenez Cruz. Just before sunrise on October 15, 2020, the 32-year-old victim was strangled to death when the hood on his clothing was caught in a spinning shaft on the machine, the District Attorney's Office stated.David Willoughby, 50, the president of Willoughby Farms, Inc. was arraigned Tuesday on felony charges. The corporation will be arraigned Wednesday. The allegations include failing to provide adequate training to employees and failing to cover "dangerous parts of the machine, causing the death of Mr. Cruz," prosecutors wrote.
