Olivia Chow is the 66th mayor of Toronto, edging out Ana Bailão in what turned out to be a two-candidate race after both women received over 200,000 votes each.Bailão, who was endorsed by former mayor John Tory days before Toronto residents headed to the polls, emerged strong out of the gate and led Chow for a portion of the evening.“The time is now to come together as a city to solve our biggest challenges,” Bailão said.In Chow, voters have elevated a progressive — and the first woman of colour — to lead Toronto, ending more than a decade of conservative rule at city hall. She maintained a steady, commanding lead in the polls for most of her campaign, and her front-runner status made her a target for most other leading candidates in the race.Former police chief Mark Saunders, who placed third in Toronto’s byelection with over 61,000 votes, often targeted Chow as he recognized her as public enemy number one. Here are some notable moment...Still Cruising: Tom premieres new ‘Mission Impossible’ adventure in Abu Dhabi

AUSTIN (Nexstar) -- As Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis hosted his first presidential rally on the Rio Grande River on Monday, he made a promise to deliver on an immigration policy the state's top Republicans sought all legislative session."The states should be permitted to send people back," the second-most-popular candidate for the Republican nomination told supporters. "As president, we are going to fully deputize all state and local governments to be able to enforce immigration law. You will be able to have that authority."In the audience was State Rep. Matt Schaefer, R-Tyler, who carried major legislation that would have asserted Texas' powers to police the federal border. His House Bill 20 would have established the Border Protection Unit, deputizing state police to use force against unauthorized immigrants independent of the federal government. It failed late in the legislative session among concerns that it would amount to an unconstitutional insubordination of federal power. But th...APD: 17 year old, 3 juveniles arrested in connection with southeast Austin shooting death

ATLANTA — Monday night’s matchup between Twins veteran starter Sonny Gray and young Atlanta ace Spencer Strider looked, on paper, as if it could be quite the pitcher’s duel. And for most of the night, the two starters lived up to the billing. Twins hitters, most getting their first look at Strider, could do little against the 24-year-old righty. Joey Gallo’s solo home run, which he hit out to dead center, was the only blemish on a night in which he otherwise dominated Twins hitters. And for most of the night, Gray matched him. It wasn’t until the seventh inning that the Braves broke through, scoring three runs to lift them to a 4-1 win on Monday night at Truist Park.Up until the seventh inning, Gray had allowed just one run, which came around to score on a fielder’s choice in the fourth inning. But otherwise, he maneuvered his way through one of the best lineups in baseball efficiently, earning himself the chance to return to the mound for the seventh. But the decision to send him back...bill alkofer, former Pioneer Press photojournalist, dies at 61

bill alkofer could no longer lift a camera, but he was still a journalist.“The last time I saw him, a couple of days before he died, we looked at slides,” says Craig Lassig, a fellow photojournalist and friend. “We were looking at slides of his photos of Johnny Rotten from the Sex Pistols and David Byrne from Talking Heads. I was holding a light table and a loop against his eye so he could look at the slides and decide what pictures he wanted to give to friends.”alkofer, a former Pioneer Press photojournalist who had been living with a variation of ALS for about five years, died on Friday at Sholom in St. Paul. He was 61.(He had legally changed his name to a lowercase format, so we are honoring that in the styling for this obituary.)If one photograph can encapsulate his career and his determination to always get the photo, for alkofer that image might be from the Grand Forks flood in North Dakota.
